The Vuelta a Espana opened the weekend with the first of two consecutive mountain stages, which saw the overall contenders race incredibly conservatively to save their legs for climbs-to-come. This lull allowed Romain Bardet, the fallen great French hope, to grab a stage win from the early breakaway and land his first WorldTour victory in four years.
